Southern Plains Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center:
Culturally Competent Tobacco Cessation Project
Through a partnership with the Oklahoma State Department of Health Tobacco Use and Prevention Services Office, the SPIEC is holding a two-day "Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills" training workshop for Tribes and I/T/Us that will encompass 1) Culturally competent tobacco cessation training; and 2) Culturally competent "Train the Trainer" training. During this workshop the Indian Health Service Tobacco Field Guide will be disseminated. This field guide is an evidence based application of the 5A's and 5R's Cessation Model. It demonstrates the IHS cessation system and will be utilized to build capacity for cessation programs at the tribal level.
Technical assistance will be provided to tribes and I/T/U staff who received the IHS Field Guide. Technical assistance will be provided by project staff by phone or in-person as requested and feasible.
